Edge-first architecture: what belongs at the edge?

A practical decision model for static delivery, edge functions, databases and asynchronous work.

Start with the workload

The word edge is not a reason to move every system out of a regional server. Begin by listing requests, latency sensitivity, data residency, payload size, traffic shape and consistency guarantees. Static content and lightweight request validation often fit edge delivery; long-running business jobs and tightly coupled transactional workloads may need different execution paths.

For this website, the HTML, styles, illustrations and frontend tools are served as immutable or revalidated static assets. There is no claim that the public product demos run distributed backends.

A composable reference path

Pages can serve the web interface; Workers can validate incoming requests and enforce per-route access rules. D1 may fit structured relational data; R2 is appropriate for object storage rather than serving as a relational database. Queues and Workflows are potential choices for deferred or durable processing when implemented and tested.

A reference design is an engineering proposal, not a deployed product. Every component deserves an explicit problem statement, cost estimate, ownership boundary and failure policy before adoption.

Design for limits and failure

Document idempotency, retry budgets, authorization boundaries, logging retention and graceful degradation. A retry without idempotency can duplicate a payment or dispatch; an edge endpoint without abuse controls can become a cost amplifier.

Use environment-specific secrets, least-privilege API tokens and explicit quotas. Never expose admin credentials or R2 secret access keys in static frontend bundles.

Measure the outcome

Measure end-to-end response time, tail latency, error rate, cache hit ratio and per-request cost. Compare a baseline before calling an architectural change an improvement.

Our public tools favor browser-local processing for privacy and transparent behavior. More advanced hosted orchestration remains future work, not a shipped claim.
